EVE JOHNSON HOUGHTON's What About Carlo scooped £12,938 when he won the 0-105 Bathwick Tyres Handicap at Newbury on Saturday, almost £6,000 less than the race yielded a year previously.
Johnson Houghton had previously branded the total drop in prize-money of £10,000 a "disgrace" that amounted to a "pay cut" for racing professionals.
Last year the 1m2f Bathwick Tyres Handicap, was worth £30,000, with £18,675 going to the winner, but this term the pot dropped to £20,000, with only £12,938 to the winner.
Johnson Houghton said in Saturday's Racing Post: "I love Newbury, it's my local track, they do a lot of things well and look after owners very well.
"But the prize-money needs to be spread around more. It's a pay cut and running a 0-105 handicap for £20,000, when it's on terrestrial television, is a disgrace."
Andy Clifton, director of communications at Newbury, said: "In running this race at £20,000 this year it was being returned to the value it had been run at for several years."
What About Carlo, who had finished ninth in the race last year, came home best under Tom Queally, scoring by a length and three quarters.
She added: "What About Carlo loves the course, so much so that we have schooled him and he might come back here for a novice hurdle at the Hennessy meeting. He is a big strapping horse and he loves soft ground."
