ZIVANIA, a foundation mare for Peter and Antoinette Kavanagh's Kildaragh Stud in County Kildare, died recently at the grand old age of 28.
Bought as a yearling at Goffs and pretrained at home, the daughter of Shernazar was sent into training with Jim Bolger and carried Antoinette Kavanagh's silks to win four races within 24 days of each other at two, and to finish second in three separate Listed contests at the Curragh at three.
Zivania returned to Kildaragh to become a broodmare and excelled in her second career, producing 13 foals, ten winners and seven black-type horses.
Her best representatives were Italian Group 2 winner Ivan Luis (by Lycius), 1,000 Guineas third Hathrah (Linamix) and UAE 2,000 Guineas scorer Stagelight (Montjeu).
Zivania has taken root in pedigrees, with her Listed-winning daughter Amathia having produced stakes winners Distant Memories, Mohedian Lady and Mutatis Mutandis; her Listed-placed daughter Viscaria featuring as the granddam of Group 3 Amethyst Stakes scorer Onenightidreamed; and Hathrah having produced Listed winner and Group 1-placed Hadaatha.
Antoinette Kavanagh said: "Fortunately we have one stakes-winning daughter and two black-type granddaughters carrying on the line. Her black-type granddaughter Orcia retires to Kildaragh this autumn.
"She was a unique mare – very competitive on the track and excelled at producing sales horses who subsequently became talented racehorses.
"Her passing brings an end of an era for Kildaragh but she will always hold pride of place here on the stud."
