Limato set for Breeders’ Cup Mile
Limato is on course for a fascinating clash with Tepin in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita after connections decided to swerve an outing in the Turf Sprint.
Limato will take his chance in the Breeders' Cup Mile
Although both races were under consideration for the four-year-old, a decision was made to give him just the one entry in the Mile.
The gelded son of Tagula, winner of the July Cup and Prix da la Foret, finished fourth on his sole try over the trip in the Lockinge at Newbury in May.
Candy said: "We've decided to just give him the entry in the Mile. I didn't like the idea of the sprint course in case he is slow away. I suppose as it is an easy mile you have got to think he will get it.
"Limato is in good shape and he will go out there on Saturday. He had a spin on Friday and I'm very happy with him."
While confident Limato will get the trip, the Wantage handler believes he will have his work cut out against last year's winner Tepin – even though the Mark Casse-trained five-year-old was turned over at odds-on in a Grade One event at Keeneland earlier this month.
Candy added: "There is only one problem, and that is the opposition.
"It (Tepin's Keeneland defeat) looked like a straightforward error of judgement last time, to me.
"I'm sure she will be ridden more handy this time as she has got a good turn of foot, as we saw when she quickened up well at Ascot.
"She will be very hard to beat but we will give it our best shot."
