Listed win for ‘lazy’ Berlais

Surtee Du Berlais (14/1) stayed on powerfully to win the Listed OLBG Mares' Hurdle at Kempton Park.

Oliver Sherwood's six-year-old was attempting the three-mile trip for the first time and needed every yard of it to catch Rons Dream, who had travelled powerfully throughout.

Three pulled clear from halfway with Run Ructions Run and Jessber's Dream accompanying Rons Dream but when Sean Bowen went clear it looked like she would collect.

However, Leighton Aspell, who had been pushing away for well over a mile, persisted on his mount who ended up going away to win well by three and a quarter lengths.

Sherwood said: "She's been screaming out for the rain. I've been schooling her over fences, but I couldn't find a suitable race for her.

"With the rain as it is I thought we'd have a crack at this as she wants it soft and the rain came at the right time.

"The owners are unfortunately in South Africa so weren't here to witness it. She's not a bad buy for 4,000 euros from the sales.

"It's job done now she's won a Listed race. Ground is very important so they might keep her to hurdles.

"She's lazy and only does what she has to do, but she is tough."
