LUCKY LION, who took the scalp of Noble Mission when he won at Group 1 level, will commence his stallion career at Gestut Graditz in Germany next year.

The five-year-old son of High Chaparral was bred by Stall Parthenaue out of the Listed-winning Big Shuffle mare Lips Arrow and was bought by trainer Andreas Lowe at the BBAG Yearling Sale for €80,000.

Lucky Lion carried the silks of the Mosca family's Gestut Winterhauch and excelled at three, when he won the Group 3 Dr Busch Memorial, the Group 2 German 2,000 Guineas and chased home Sea The Moon when second in the German Derby.

His finest hour came on his next start, when he defeated Frankel's three-time Group 1-winning brother Noble Mission by half a length to win the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich.

He failed to show the same level of form at four or at five, although he did finish a close fourth in the following year's Grosser Dallmayr-Preis and was not far behind Solow in a conditions race at Chantilly this year.

Gestut Graditz manager Mathias Tandler told Galopponline.de: "We came to agreement with the Mosca family on all the contract points at the BBAG Yearling Sale and his stud fee will be announced at the Hanover breeders' day on September 26.

"The cross of a Big Shuffle dam over High Chaparral has already worked well with [German champion two-year-old] Tai Chi, so we are very optimistic for Lucky Lion."

Lucky Lion will stand at Graditz alongside Arrigo, a Group 2-winning son of Shirocco.
