Magnificent Cue Card lands his third Betfair Chase
Magnificent Cue Card
lands third Betfair Chase By Lee Mottershead 3:12PM 19 NOV 2016
Report: Haydock, Saturday
Betfair Chase (Grade 1) 3m, 5yo+
A MAGNIFICENT horse produced a magnificent performance as Cue Card, surely the most popular horse in training, took Betfair Chase honours for the third time.
The biggest race of the jump season so far produced a display worthy of its standing, prize-money and billing with Cue Card pulling clear of former Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Coneygree over the final four fences.
Public affection for both Cue Card and Coneygree is huge, and rightly so, but the durability, consistency and talent of the Colin Tizzard-trained veteran has taken him right to the very heart of racing fans.
On an unforgettable afternoon at Haydock he showed why.
In a race in which attritional conditions proved too much for high-class rivals Silviniaco Conti, Irish Cavalier and Seeyouatmidnight, it was left to the big two to fight out the finish up Haydock's home straight, yet from a long way out it was Cue Card who held all the aces.
"He absolutely sluiced up today," said Tizzard. "He's every bit as good as he has ever been."
Cue Card appears to be just that and now heads to Kempton, where he will bid for a repeat success in the 32Red King George VI Chase.
French raider Vezelay ran a massive race to take third at 50-1.
