A TRIP to northern Spain for the Charlie Mann-trained Sureness was not without reward as the six-year-old produced a valiant effort from the front to finish second in the Gran Pemio Hotel Maria Cristina at San Sebastian.

In setting a stern pace, Sureness did not look to be travelling all that well as she rounded the final turn, however with challengers queuing up behind she responded well to pressure, without being able to keep tabs on clear-cut winner Rock Eyes.

Although missing out on the top prize of €18,000, connections took home €7,200 and Mann said: “She’s run a cracker. It was quite crowded and a hard race for her taking it on from the front, but she’s run really well. She went to sleep a little, but the jockey [Roberto Montenegro] gave her a good ride.

“It’s all worthwhile as her prize-money has covered the cost of the trip. The owners have loved it. We’ll give her a break and then begin planning the next international trip. It’s up to the owners but possibly it could be to the San Siro in Milan.”
