Mann relishing Lama’s next test
Trainer Charlie Mann is hoping Some Kinda Lama can continue the stable's good run of form at Cheltenham on Saturday.
Action from Cheltenham
There are 30 entries for the three mile, one and a half furlong Regulatory Finance Solutions Handicap Hurdle on day two of this weekend's Open meeting, with the weights headed by the Gordon Elliott-trained De Plotting Shed (11st 13lb).
Some Kinda Lama is at the bottom of the handicap on 10st 1lb following two minor victories over an extended three miles at Hereford this autumn.
The lightly-raced five-year-old captured a maiden hurdle by seven lengths and registered his first handicap success on the final day of October, making all the running on both occasions.
Mann, who has a 29 per cent strike rate so far this 2016/2017 jumps season, said: "Some Kinda Lama is likely to go for the Listed handicap hurdle on Saturday.
"He has also has an entry in the conditional jockeys' race on Sunday at Cheltenham but he has top-weight in that whereas on Saturday he only has 10st 1lb and the trip will suit him better.
"He has been great since his most recent start at Hereford. He only lost two kilos and didn't have a race. He is a nice young horse and I am quite keen to get him in a better race because he needs something to take him a long a bit. He has made the running the last twice and hates it. He just falls asleep but circumstance was against us as they were small fields.
"I think he is very well handicapped. I have always thought a lot of him but he was too weak last year. He is a good horse who will make a better chaser but I think he will win a decent race somewhere this season."
Entries for the £30,000 contest also feature Thistlecrack's half-brother West Approach (Colin Tizzard), Fingal Bay from Philip Hobbs' yard and Paul Nicholls' returningIrish Saint, who also has an entry in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury on November 26.
