Massaat ready for Sovereign
Owen Burrows has picked out Thursday’s totepool Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury as the race to relaunch the season of 2000 Guineas runner-up Massaat.
Massaat is on course to reappear at Salisbury
Also second to Air Force Blue in the Dewhurst last season, he looked to have a bright future when splitting Galileo Gold and Ribchester in the colts’ Classic, with both rivals subsequently franking the form.
However, Massaat has not been seen since running too freely in the Derby over a mile and a half and Burrows was keen to give him plenty of time to get over that experience.
“At the moment the plan is to run at Salisbury,” he said.
“We gave him an easy month after the Derby but we’ve gradually been building him back up.
“It was a top-class Guineas. Galileo Gold consistently franks the form and Ribchester has also proved a progressive colt, so to split them was a big run.
“Fingers crossed, if he can return to that sort of form, this would be a nice confidence booster.”
