Mega Fortune favours Elliott

Gordon Elliott won another valuable prize in his pursuit of the trainer's championship as his Mega Fortune saw off Willie Mullins' Bapaume in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown.

Mega Fortune showed a willing attitude

The 9/2 chance had been beaten by Bapaume on his two most recent starts but responded to the fitting of cheekpieces – for the first time over obstacles – to reverse the form.

The two were prominent throughout in a race where nothing else got into it after the strong-travelling Dinaria Des Obeaux – a stablemate of the winner – made a bad mistake as the temp quickened.

Davy Russell always looked to be travelling that little bit better aboard the eventual winner with Ruby Walsh niggling Bapaume along but having gone several lengths down, it momentarily appeared as though Walsh might snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

He switched Bapaume off the rail and began to close the deficit in the run to the last but Mega Fortune found more when challenged again to prevail by three and a half lengths.

Sky Bet cut the winner to 7/1 from 16s for the JCB Triumph Hurdle while leaving fourth home Meri Devie at 6/1 and pushing third Dinaria Des Obeaux out two points to 10/1.
