Davy Russell, bringing up his 50 for the Irish season, had the Gordon Elliott-trained winner much handier than when taking on Bapaume previously and stayed on strongly to turn the tables after they had the Grade 1 between them from the second-last.

The winning trainer said: "It's the Triumph Hurdle now. We put the cheekpieces on and planned to make a lot of use of him – bounce ou and sit upsides."

There was a mixed reaction from bookmakers with Ladbrokes longest at 10-1 but 6-1 with Paddy Power.

Bapaume eased to as big as 12-1 with Sky Bet with ante-post favourite Defi Du Seuil shortened further to 7-2.

After a steady early pace Bapaume jumped ahead at halfway shadowed by Mega Fortune and after Elliott's other contender Dinaria Des Obeaux blundered two out the race only concerned the front two.

Bapaume threatened a rally after the last but Mega Fortune stayed on to win by three and a half lengths with Dinaria De Obeaux rallying well for third.

Joseph O'Brien's three runners filled the last three places with Housesofparliament very disappointing after racing keenly with the pace until weakening quickly after halfway.
