SIGNS OF BLESSING, the all-the-way winner of the Prix Maurice de Gheest, has proved aptly named with his Group 1 breakthrough coming at the perfect time for Haras du Mezeray, the stud at which he was born and raised.
His victory on Sunday means two of the lots Mezeray will consign at the upcoming Arqana August Yearling Sale now have a significant update. Lot 129, an Invincible Spirit filly out of Sun Bittern boasts the biggest update, being a sister to the Group 1 hero, while lot 247, a Lawman filly out of Lucrece, who was the first foal produced by Sun Bittern, now holds significantly greater commercial appeal.
Mezeray’s Philippe Brosset said: “Signs Of Blessing has always been highly rated by Francois Rohaut. We have his sister, who’s a lovely, medium-sized filly. She’s a good mover. I looked at Signs Of Blessing on Sunday and I thought she’s not unlike him.
“She’s got a lovely head, you can see the Invincible Spirit in her. I’d say she’s stronger and could be an earlier type than Signs Of Blessing was.
“The same breeder also has Lucrece, who was the first foal out of Sun Bittern. Lucrece’s first foal is a very nice filly by Lawman – she’s a similar type but I’d say she’ll be a filly for May or June.”
Signs Of Blessing and her Arqana-bound relations were bred by Serge Boucheron.
“We’ve been very fortunate for the breeder,” added Brosset. “He never has more than four or five mares on the farm but that is the second Group 1 winner he’s bred after Naaqoos.”
