Moment to savour for Pipe team
David Pipe's What A Moment won the Markel Insurance Amateur Riders' Handicap Chase at Cheltenham under Richard Harding.
Trainer David Pipe: Won the last race on the first day of the Open Meeting
Having just his second start over fences, the six-year-old was sent off at 8/1 on the back of a pleasing debut second at Aintree last month and ran out a ready winner from the front-running Troika Steppes.
Troika Steppes, an impressive all-the-way victor at the Showcase meeting, tried to repeat the tactics and had plenty of his rivals cooked before making a shuddering error at the third last obstacle.
That handed the initiative to the winner, who had been given a patient ride on the wide outside of the field by Harding, and the promising stayer bounded up the hill to score by two and a quarter lengths from Troika Steppes, with the Jamie Codd-ridden Fayette County back in third.
Pipe said on Racing UK: "We probably haven't got as many running here (Open Meeting) as we would in previous years but hopefully it's a small but select team.
"He's done it nicely – he's jumped and travelled well and has been given a great ride. The horse doesn't always find a lot off the bridle but he's found plenty today."
