Nakeeta cut down by flying Spear
Golden Spear stayed on strongly to collar British raider Nakeeta in a thrilling finish to the TOTE November Handicap at Leopardstown.
Tony Martin: Absent from Leopardstown as he prepares Heartbreak City for the Melbourne Cup.
After Wakea took them along for most of the race, Chester Cup runner-up Nakeeta, who looked to have the perfect spot under Seamie Heffernan, eased into the lead turning for home. But his move was tracked by Tony Martin's charge and the pair did battle up the straight.
Conor Hoban's mount gradually wore down the leader and forged ahead in the last 100 yards to record a half-length margin over Iain Jardine's gelding with another two lengths back to the Ralph Beckett-trained Magic Circle in third.
Hoban said of the 7/1 winner: "It's great to get the opportunity from Tony. I was talking to him last night, he's in Australia, and he filled me with loads of confidence.
"He told me to ride him for luck and if it happens, it happens. In fairness he had the horse turned out perfectly for today and it worked out brilliant.
"I was delighted to get the ride and thanks to my agent Ciaran O'Toole who got me on him, it was a great ride to get.
"When you are riding for Tony in those big handicaps, he is the man to go to, and he filled me with loads of confidence.
"The gaps will either come or they won't, you just keep sitting. I followed Seamie (Heffernan, on Nakeeta) through the whole way and he gave me a great run.
"It's special to win it at the end of the season – it caps it and it was badly wanted."
