NATIVE RIVER kept his unbeaten record over fences at Newbury and enhanced his Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup chances with a comfortable defeat of outsider Le Mercurey.

Punters had gone against Colin Tizzard's Hennessy Gold Cup and Welsh Grand National winner preferring Bristol De Mai, who was a disappointing last of three.

Aidan Coleman, riding Native River for the first time after taking over from the unwell Richard Johnson, was content to let Native River pop his fences at a steady pace before asking the questions after jumping the fourth-last.

Le Mercurey looked to be travelling just as well as Native River for the next two fences but Native River showed his never-say-die attitude to stretch away on the run-in.
