CLAN DES OBEAUX turned in a stylish round of jumping to serve notice of his ability as a novice on the up, but it was a chasing debut to forget for One Track Mind, who never recovered from a mistake at the first.

Sixth in the Triumph Hurdle last season, Clan Des Obeaux had finished fourth on his chasing bow at Chepstow, and the benefits of that experience were obvious as he jumped well throughout, saving his best for the fences in the home straight as he careered away from the field for a ten-length win.

Trainer Paul Nicholls was pleased with the performance and said: "We knew he was good. Chepstow was only his fourth run and he needed that to learn. He's improved enormously since then."

Paddy Power introduced Clan Des Obeaux at 12-1 for the JLT Novices' Chase, and 20-1 for the RSA, though Nicholls stressed that he wanted to mind the horse and did not have any immediate big targets for him.

First-fence blunder

It was a faultless display from the winner, but One Track Mind, a Grade 1 winner over hurdles at Punchestown last season, struggled badly for Warren Greatrex and Gavin Sheehan.

Sent off the 15-8 favourite, the six-year-old failed to get very high at the first, a mistake which seemed to shatter his confidence. He then ballooned his next few fences, and the slow leaps soon left him detached. He did complete, but finished last of five, beaten 92 lengths.

Greatrex was not too despondent, and said: "He was in trouble after that mistake at the first and had no chance. He'll be fine and I won't mess around, I might look for a race next weekend. It's one of those things and his schooling had been good."
