Newbury planning to cover up
Officials at Newbury are planning to put the frost covers down on Tuesday ahead of Betfair Super Saturday.
With temperatures set to dip below freezing later in the week, the Newbury team will cover the entire course to ensure this weekend's meeting is given the best chance of going ahead.
Leading Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Native River and odds-on Arkle favourite Altior are two horses who could star on the card, which also features the Betfair Hurdle.
Andy Clifton, head of communications, said: "We are planning to put frost covers down tomorrow. We are going to cover the whole course just to be on the safe side.
"The temperature is due to get down to minus 1C on Wednesday, minus 2C on Thursday and minus 1C on Friday, with temperatures getting up to 4C or 5C in the day.
"Given the forecast, we are more than likely to be OK, but if it is a couple of degrees colder than predicted, that could cause difficulties. At our January meeting it was forecast to get down to minus 1C, but it got down to minus 4C.
"It is a big meeting in it's own right with more than £300,000 in prize money on offer. It is important to us and to Betfair that it goes ahead."
