Newbury set fair to beat weather

Newbury officials anticipate no problems from the weather ahead of their big meeting on Saturday, featuring the valuable Betfair Hurdle.

The course has been covered as a precaution and the going is described as soft on the hurdle course and soft, good to soft on the chase track.

"All's looking good. We've had a few snow flurries, but no snow's been lying," said clerk of the course Richard Osgood.

"Temperatures will go a bit lower tonight, but we've covered up so it shouldn't cause us a problem.

"We'll take the covers off, probably starting about seven o'clock in the morning if everything is OK. Underneath the covers, the ground is fine."

On a stellar card, tagged as 'Super Saturday', Gold Cup hopefuls Native River and Bristol De Mai clash in the Denman Chase, with Altior and Fox Norton the headline acts in the Game Spirit Chase.
