OFFLEE WILD, the sire of 2014 Breeders' Cup Classic hero Bayern, passed away at the TJK Silivri Stud in Turkey on Tuesday. He was 16.
Bred by Dorothy Matz out of the Seattle Slew mare Alvear, Offlee Wild was a half-brother to the Grade 2-winning mare Sangrita and hailed from the family of Grade 2 hero and sire Dynaformer.
Offered for sale at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2001, he was snapped up by Azalea Stables for $325,000.
Trained by T V Smith and then Richard Dutrow Jr, Offlee Wild's biggest victory came when landing the Grade 1 Suburban Handicap in 2005.
He originally began his stud career at Darley's Jonabell Farm in Kenutcky.
Leading performers by the son of Wild Again include the Grade 1-winning mare She Be Wild and the Grade 3-placed Hogy.
He leaves behind 20 foals on the ground this year.
