Otago best in Rehearsal
Otago Trail claimed victory in an attritional renewals of the At The Races Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle.
Otago Trail: Newcastle winner
The Venetia Williams-trained eight-year-old was a 9-1 shot on his first appearance since finishing third at Ayr in April and was always travelling strongly under Grand National-winning jockey Liam Treadwell.
Bristol De Mai did his best to see off Otago Trail's challenge in the straight, but the Williams runner saw out the three miles best to take the Listed prize by three and a quarter lengths.
Definitly Red, the 5-4 favourite, got rolling all too late and passed the post in third place.
Treadwell, who only recently returned from a long spell on the sidelines, said: "There was no hiding place out there.
"We've gone a good gallop from the start.
"He jumps and gets into a rhythm, but he had to have the gears early.
"We all know Venetia gets her horses fit. He came here in peak form and it's nice it all came together.
"I had a five-and-a-half-month break, so this is effectively my first winner for six months.
"It's been a taxing few days and I'm very grateful to Venetia and the owners for keeping the faith in me.
"They could easily have put someone else up who was riding winners and full of confidence.
"This will do my confidence good."
* Ben Linfoot tipped the winner Otago Trail at 11/1 in his Value Bet column on Friday evening.
