PAUL JOHN repeated his original evidence over the ride he gave Echo Brava at Plumpton last December as the rehearing of the Jim Best case began at the BHA in London on Monday.

Wincing with pain from a broken collarbone sustained in a riding accident recently, John, 24, told the inquiring BHA QC Louis Weston he had watched DVDs of the race recently at home, ahead of giving evidence.

John told the hearing he now had a livery yard, breaking in 17 horses, on his farm in Devon, had a category B amateur rider's licence and is looking to take out a licence to train point-to-point horses this season.

"I was riding a horse on the gallop and came down in deep sand and broke my collarbone," said John, explaining his injury.

John corrected wrong dates of a weekend visiting his ailing mother in Devon having cost him a winning ride on the Best-trained Maria's Choice.

Then he repeated his description of his ride on Echo Brava, stating: "I had torn his teeth out for two and a half miles, for the whole race.

"I am fighting with his head to slow it down, looking like a jockey who is pushing to go forward to deceive stewards and punters, looking like you are trying when you are not."

Asked by Weston why he had done this, John said it was on the instructions of his then boss Best.

The rehearing is expected to last until Friday as the BHA seeks to prove Best guilty of instructing Paul to stop both Echo Brava at Plumpton and Missile Man at Towcester shortly afterwards and bringing racing into disrepute.

Best was found guilty at the original hearing and banned for four years, but he had that quashed when it was found the chairman of the disciplinary panel concerned, Matthew Lohn, had undertaken paid work for the BHA, and an appearance of bias emerged.
