Rathnure Rebel earmarked for Limerick

Noel Meade is eyeing a festive appearance at Limerick with Rathnure Rebel following his runaway victory at Cork on Sunday.

Noel Meade: Trains Rathnure Rebel

Having arrived from the point-to-point field with a big reputation, the six-year-old disappointed on his Rules debut in a Punchestown bumper last spring and also failed to fire on his hurdling bow at Sligo in May.

However, Rathnure Rebel dominated on his seasonal reappearance at Clonmel in November and was just impressive at the weekend when stepped up in class and distance in the Grade Three Kerry Group Stayers Novice Hurdle.

Meade has now identified the Kirkland Investments Novice Hurdle, a race won by the brilliant Faugheen three years ago, at Limerick on December 29 as a possible next port of call.

"We've always thought he was a nice horse and we weren't surprised to see him do what he did," said the Tu Va handler.

"When we bought him we knew he was pretty decent.

"He beat Three Musketeers 10 lengths in his point-to-point and actually almost fell at the first and still managed to come back and win.

"He's just had a lot of little issues since we've had him, but we've had a good run with him this season and fingers crossed we can keep him in one piece.

"I haven't spoken to the owners (Gigginstown House Stud) yet, but I'd imagine he'll go for the three-mile novice in Limerick over Christmas.

"That was the first thought in my head, anyway."
