Waldgeist was sent off favourite, having won the Criterium de Saint-Cloud last season, while Akihiro had just been touched off in a Group Three on his return.

But neither horse could get near Recoletos, who quickened two and a half lengths clear under Olivier Peslier.

Unplaced on his sole outing last season, he is now three out of three for Carlos Laffon-Parias this campaign and holds an entry in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

There was little between the Fabre pair in second and third, with Waldgeist narrowly coming out ahead.
