Red Verdon set for Goodwood
Ed Dunlop is set to ease Red Verdon in class on his next start in an attempt to return him to winning ways with an outing in the Smarter Bets At Matchbook Tapster Stakes at Goodwood.
After finishing down the field in the Ormonde Stakes over an extended mile and five furlongs at Chester on his return to action, the four-year-old will drop down to Listed company for a tilt at the mile-and-a-half contest on Saturday.
The son of Lemon Drop Kid performed creditably in both the English and Irish Derby last season, before finishing second in the Grand Prix de Paris at Saint-Cloud in July, on what was to be his final start of the campaign.
Dunlop said: "Red Verdon goes to Goodwood for the mile-and-a-half Listed race. He needed the race very badly at Chester, as he had been very ill during the winter.
"He got tired four furlongs out and Pat Smullen was pleased with him. We expected to see that result.
"He stripped a lot fitter and he looks a lot better for it. I think we should gauge him on where we are next time, but we will drop him down to the Listed race at Goodwood if all is well with him and then see where we are."
