RIBCHESTER recorded a first success at the highest level with a commanding performance to land the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville on Sunday.

As the race entered its final stages, the colt was travelling beautifully under William Buick and pulled clear to win by half a length.

Bred by A Thompson and M O’Brien, Ribchester is the first foal out of the Marju mare Mujarah and is from the family of Group winners Tactic, Convergence and Mehthaaf.

He is also a half-brother to Golconda Prince, who is also trained by his handler Richard Fahey, who finished third on his debut in a 7f maiden at Catterick earlier this month.

At the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in 2014 he was snapped up by Highfield Farm for €105,000.

Ribchester becomes the sixth individual Group 1 winner for his sire Iffraaj, whose other leading performers include Benvenue, Chriselliam, Rizeena and Wootton Bassett.

A 15-year-old son of Zafonic, Iffraaj was trained by Saaed bin Suroor to win seven races including two editions of the Group 2 Park Stakes and also landed the Group 2 Lennox Stakes.

He is currently standing the 2016 season at a fee of £22,500 at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket.
