ROBERT MABBETT, 37, of Betfred is the new Racing Post/SIS Manager of the Year.

He was declared the winner on Monday afternoon from the eight regional champions and an original entry that involved high achievers from betting offices all over Britain and Ireland. He was already the north-east champion and his shop is at Walton Road, Brough, East Yorkshire. His nearest racecourse is Beverley.

He received his award from Sir Geoff Hurst and it is the first time Betfred have won the accolade. Mabbett will go on a VIP trip to the Emirates Singapore Derby Singapore next July courtesy of the Singapore Turb Club.

Brough Scott, chairman of the judging panel said: "Robert emerges as a wonderful winner in an extremely high quality set of regional champions. I have no doubt he will prove a wonderfully positive ambassador over the coming year."

Helen Scott of SIS added: "Yet again we were treated to eight excellent performances at final judging, each year the quality and calibre never ceases to impress. All of us in this industry should feel extremely lucky and proud that we have such talent representing us on the high street. Congratulations to Robert and his team, a very deserving champion."

Mabbett will be invited to Belle Vue next month to make a presentation at the RPGTV Oaks and Laurels gala, live on Sky Sports. His team will also be treated to a day's racing at Ascot on Friday December 16 when they take over the SIS box.

The ABB's Back Your Local Bookie campaign was commended during the Awards function by Paul Darling, the ABB chairman.

He called for as many people as possible to sign up at backyourlocalbookie.org
