Roman force wins the day

Nick Scholfield delivered Un Beau Roman for a 25/1 success in the £45,000 BetVictor Handicap Chase, denying the well-backed Pairofbrowneyes who had looked to have put the race to bed off the home turn.

Pairofbrowneyes, trained by Barry Murphy in Ireland, had got the better of the attackingly-ridden De Faoithesdream before the second-last fence and taken a clear advantage.

Still two and a half lengths clear jumping the final fence, he just began to falter coming up the hill and although he rallied when joined by Un Beau Roman, who had travelled nicely on the inside of the field for much of the race, he was just unable to repel the Paul Henderson-trained winner by a head.

Bally Longford just held on from De Faoithesdream in the last stride to claim third place.

"I was thinking we might sneak up on his inside, but fair play to the horse, he was able to come back and come right round them on the outside when I pulled him out," Scholfield told Racing UK.

"His form was a bit in and out last season, but he benefited from a break and Paul had got him fit for this."

His trainer Paul Henderson added: "He worked very well a few days ago, ridden by a lad who was a couple of stone heavier than the others, and he absolutely bombed along so I was hopeful.

"I have won a race here before, but this is a big prize and I always feel humble to come to Cheltenham and have a winner."
