SCOTTISH got the best of the draw among the European challengers for the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, with the Godolphin gelding set to break from stall 7 in the 18-runner field.
Winner of the Strensall Stakes at the Ebor meeting on his last European start this year, Scottish is the most fancied foreign runner in the field and trainer Charlie Appleby expressed his satisfaction with the draw.
"I'm delighted with barrier seven," he said. "It gives Kerrin [McEvoy] plenty of options. If we can get a nice clear run into the race we are hopeful of being very competitive."
Sir Isaac Newton goes for Aidan O'Brien in stall 9, while German challenger Articus goes in 11.
Favourite Jameka saw her odds lengthen a little when she was drawn in stall 13. Trainer Ciaron Maher said: "It's not the outside and it's not the inside.
"You need to draw a barrier to win the race but I cannot control that. I can only control what I can and that's getting the horse fit and she's in good order."
There are other horses in the line up that will be familiar to European fans. Sir John Hackwood will break from stall 8, while Our Ivanhowe (stall 2) and Exospheric (3) both raced in Europe under different names, the latter going off favourite for the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot this year as Exosphere.
The $3 million Caulfield Cup is one of the major trials for the Melbourne Cup, which will take place on November 1.
