SOBETSU and Spatial, who met in a maiden at Newmarket's July Course in August, face off again at the Rowley Mile on Friday with the stakes far higher in the Group 1 Dubai Fillies' Mile.
Both are general 20-1 shots for the Qipco 1,000 Guineas as they take a marked step up in grade to try to secure Group 1 honours at their first attempt in Group company.
Although they share just four runs between them, there is substance to their form. Spatial finished runner-up to Sobetsu's stablemate Wuheida on her debut, with the winner going on to Group 1 success at Chantilly last Sunday.
Spatial, with the benefit of experience, was then three and a half lengths too strong for Sobetsu, who herself showed improvement for a run to win a maiden over this course and distance by ten lengths on her second start.
"It was a big step from her first to her second run and you could say this is a huge leap to Group 1 company," said Sobetsu's trainer, Charlie Appleby.
"But we always had the Fillies' Mile in mind. We felt she'd already proven herself on the Rowley Mile and by coming here instead of Chantilly last weekend it gave her more time between runs.
"I appreciate she's got to get past Spatial, and we very much respect her, but when they met before it was Sobetsu's debut whereas Spatial had already run. Sobetsu really came forward for that first run and was very impressive last time."
Spatial 'treated as if she's pretty special'
Similarly optimistic is Chris Richardson, managing director of Spatial's owner Cheveley Park Stud but the focus is not solely on Friday's race, with next year also occupying connections' thoughts.
"There's a lot of hype and expectation at this point in time but she's done nothing wrong and is a very nice filly," said Richardson.
"With Wuheida winning in France her form looks good, but whatever she does here I think she'll be a much better filly next year. The trip is extending her but I think she'll handle it.
"She's had a typical Sir Michael [Stoute] preparation and we've treated her as if she's going to be pretty special. Hopefully she can live up to her mother's ability in time."
