Master Sabina, 6-1 favourite locally, was beaten less than a length by stable companion Master Switch (Anthony Delpech) in his first race for nearly three months over a furlong less at the Vaal and is 1kg better off.

Tim Woodruff, his father's assistant, said: "That was a good run from Master Switch but Master Sabina's prep has been a lot better than last year and he is fitter but it’s his age – he is seven now."

Master 'N Commander (Alec Forbes) is a 66-1 shot but Deo Juvente is strongly fancied after finishing less than a length third to New Predator in the Charity Mile here three weeks ago.

The Conglomerate (Joey Ramsden/Piere Strydom) won the Durban July from a bad draw and is again drawn wide. He was beaten nearly seven lengths in the Charity Mile but Ramsden was inclined to forgive that, saying: "He again didn’t catch a draw that day and he was slowly away."

Champion trainer Sean Tarry runs three with Liege (S’Manga Khumalo) and Samurai Blade (Muzi Yeni) both running well in their prep races. Judicial (Tyrone Zackey/Karl Zechner) was fourth 12 months ago and top weight Mac De Lago (Weiho Marwing/Weichong Marwing) fifth.
