Southwell reveal floodlit plan

Southwell could be staging racing under floodlights inside two years if plans for the all-weather track come to fruition.

Arena Racing Ltd, which runs the Nottinghamshire course, revealed it has applied for planning permission from Newark and Sherwood District Council.

"ARC has applied for planning permission to construct floodlights at Southwell Racecourse," ARC said in a statement.

"If successful, and subject to future fixture allocation (from the British Horseracing Authority), the current intention is for construction to begin in 2018 in time for racing under floodlights to start at Southwell in 2019."

Southwell, who also race over jumps, would become Britain's fifth floodlit track, after Chelmsford, Kempton, Newcastle and Wolverhampton.

"The application went in about 10 days ago and we hope to get a decision in the next couple of months," said Southwell racecourse director Mark Clayton.

"It's subject to the planning process and fixture allocation but our hope is that we could begin work on the project in 2018 and start racing under floodlights in 2019.

"It's an exciting time."
