Spirit Of Kayf has Pertemps aim

Spirit Of Kayf could be given a campaign tailored around making an outing in the Pertemps Final at next year's Cheltenham Festival.

Trainer Sandy Thomson has hinted the three-mile Listed handicap could be a suitable long-term target for the five-year-old.

After finishing down the field in the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham on his final start last term, the gelded son of Kayf Tara made a winning debut over hurdles on his seasonal return at Hexham last month.

Thomson said: "He did everything I hoped of him. The other horse (Master Of Finance) had a lot of Flat speed but he jumped well.

"I don't set out to win bumpers, I set out to educate them and if they do win one, hopefully they go on to make better novice hurdlers.

"There are no huge plans at the moment and maybe something like the Pertemps he could have a spin around, but that is a long way down the line.

"The ground might be quick enough by then and I would rather go and win races with him. I am not ruling that out, but let's go one step at a time.

"He has won very early in the season and maybe The French Furze at Newcastle could be a possibility, but we might try him over two and a half somewhere first."

The Greenlaw handler plans to send The Dutchman over fences when he makes his return to action from a setback.

The six-year-old was last seen out pulling up behind Yorkhill in a Grade One event at Aintree in April.

Thomson added: "The Dutchman will go novice chasing. He has just had a minor setback, but he is back on the go now. Hopefully he will be back in action at the beginning of next month.

"I don't know where he will go first time out, but he is nice horse to go novice chasing with."
