Spirit Quartz shines in Ireland
Robert Cowell enjoyed another profitable Irish raid from his Cambridgeshire base with Spirit Quartz as he powered clear of his rivals in the Kilfrush Stud Abergwaun Stakes at Tipperary.
Shane Foley partnered Spirit Quartz
A winner of a Listed contest at Cork in June, the 12-1 chance had struggled twice after that, but was always going well near the head of affairs under Shane Foley.
Once entering the final furlong the race was never in doubt, as he stretched clear to beat The Happy Prince by two and a quarter lengths, with Ostatnia taking third.
Foley said: "I was worried about the draw but he winged the gates, travelled and he was always enjoying himself.
"Robert rang me this morning and said jump and don't disappoint him. If you're in front, you're in front, and if you're getting a lead so be it. He said he was in great shape for the race.
"He did it well and showed plenty of pace."
Aidan O'Brien earlier unleashed a nice-looking debutant as Latin Beat floored the odds-on Son Of Rest in the Camas Park Stud EBF Maiden.
O'Brien said of the 2-1 winner: "You'd be very happy with that and he handled the ease in the ground well.
"He'll stay well and will get a mile and could run in the Beresford Stakes next."
Regarding the application of a tongue-tie, the Ballydoyle trainer added: "He was sticking his tongue out so and I used the tongue-tie just to keep it down."
