Talaayeb takes Newmarket opener

The news from Cambridgeshire Day where Talaayeb headed home a one-two for Hamdan Al Maktoum in the opener.

Talaayeb and Paul Mulrennan (black cap) come with a winning challenge down the centre to win the newmarketracourses.co.uk Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

The well-supported Talaayeb headed a one-two owner for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum in the newmarketracecourses.co.uk Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newmarket.

Backed down to 10/1 from 25/1 in the ring, the Owen Burrows-trained youngster ran out an authoritative winner from the Charlie Hills-trained Neshmeya in the same colours.

How's Lucy and Elas Ruby set the early pace while The Lacemaker joined in before Neshmeya, the 7/4 favourite, came with a promising run.

However, Paul Mulrennan delivered Talaayeb with a surge that saw her go two and a half lengths clear at the line. The Lacemaker was three lengths away in third place.

Mulrennan said: "I got a good tow into it and she really pulled away in the last furlong.

"The further she went the better she went, she'll definitely stay a mile in the future."

Burrows said: "I was very pleased with that. She had worked nicely at home. Paul (Hanagan) rode her last week and then went and rode Charlie's filly as well, and they both obviously worked well. He had to make a decision and unfortunately for him it didn't work out.

"My girl was very professional and although she was stuck in stall one, Paul managed to get her covered up and she will have learned plenty. She lost her backend when she went into the dip as well.

"She is a neat size, but she will do well over the winter and she is exciting. We can dare to dream. We will get our heads together and have a chat about what happens next. Those first two home are two nice fillies."
