Tally-Ho Stud to stand Mehmas in 2017

MEHMAS will take up stallion duties at Tally-Ho Stud in County Westmeath next year after the operation purchased a 50 per cent share in the Al Shaqab-owned colt.

He is likely to have his last race in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on September 24.

A dual Group 2-winning son of Acclamation trained by Richard Hannon, Mehmas was bred by Epona Bloodstock out of the unraced Machiavellian mare Lucina and was snapped up by Peter and Ross Doyle for 170,000gns at this year's Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale.

The two-year-old has run seven times this season, winning a five furlong maiden on his debut before making the step up to six furlongs to land a conditions stakes at Newbury.

Second-placed finishes to Global Applause and Caravaggio in the Listed National Stakes and the Group 2 Coventry Stakes respectively then followed.

He returned to winning ways to notch two victories at Group level in the Group 2 July Stakes and the Group 2 Richmond Stakes. He was last seen finishing second behind Churchill in Sunday's Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh.

Hannon said: "Mehmas has been a joy to train, has held his form all season and has been a model of consistency as you saw once again at the Curragh on Sunday.

"He also showed real grit and determination to win the Richmond at the Qatar Goodwood Festival and his racing characteristics should stand him in really good stead for his stallion career."

Khalifa Al Attiya, general manager of Al Shaqab Racing added: "Mehmas has given his excellency Sheikh Joaan Al Thani a lot of pleasure this season as he always ran his heart out and we will now look forward to seeing how he performs at Tally-Ho Stud."

Roger O'Callaghan, stud manager at Tally-Ho said: "We are obviously hugely excited about Mehmas arriving at Tally-Ho Stud. His good looks and superb attitude on the racecourse will be a huge attribute to him as he embarks on his new career as a stallion."
