TAUNTON'S opening meeting of the season scheduled for next Thursday has been abandoned with the going described as firm, hard in places and the forecast not offering sufficient hope of the ground easing before the November 10 fixture.
"We've come to the conclusion to abandon the meeting," said clerk of the course Jason Loosemore after inspecting the track on Wednesday.
"It's firm and hard in places and therefore unfit for racing and given the dry forecast for the next couple of weeks, with the exception of Friday where there could be a light shower but nothing like what is required to take us to a raceable position, we've abandoned at this stage."
Loosemore said the amount of watering that could be applied to the track before next week's meeting would also be insufficient to take it a stage where racing could take place.
Officials are hopeful at this stage that racing on November 24 will take place at the track.
All tickets purchased online for the meeting on November 10 in advance will be automatically refunded to the method of payment used.
An alternative fixture is being looked into by the BHA, which tweeted: "The BHA are currently assessing options regarding potentially replacing the fixture at Taunton on 10 November, which has been abandoned."
