THE LAST LION caused an upset on Saturday when battling bravely to win the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket, and in the process provided a timely update for his half-brother who will be sold at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale on Tuesday.
The Mark Johnston-trained colt led from the moment the stalls opened and despite being challenged by Blue Point, found plenty to gamely win by three-quarters of a length.
Bred by Barronstown Stud and trainer Tommy Stack, The Last Lion is the ninth foal out of the winning and Group 1-placed Brief Truce mare Mala Mala. He is a half-brother to the Listed-winning pair Russian Rock and Contest and to 7f winner Horizon Sky.
Johnston snapped up the son of Choisir at last year's edition of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale for €82,000 and has been rewarded several times this season by his investment as the colt has notched victories in the Listed Dragon Stakes and the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes.
A Power half-brother to the Group 1 hero will be offered by Glenvale Stud as lot 142 at Goffs.
Mala Mala has no foal this year, having been barren to Zoffany. but she visited No Nay Never earlier in 2016.
Choisir, a 17-year-old son of Danehill Dancer, has firmly established himself as a leading sire since retiring to stud and leading performers include Starspangledbanner, Olympic Glory and Sacred Choice.
