COLIN TIZZARD on Wedneday said he would be prepared to take Thistlecrack north for his chasing debut if he was unable to find suitable conditions for his stable star nearer to home.

The brilliant World Hurdle winner sailed through his second schooling session over fences under Tom Scudamore on Wednesday but no target will be identified until there is a break in the dry weather.

Tizzard had considered making an entry for the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite this weekend at Chepstow, where Cue Card made a winning chase debut, but has opted to wait with the going described as good, good to soft in places.

'If we have to go up north, we will'

Preparations for Thistlecrack's highly anticipated return are progressing smoothly with the trainer describing his latest schooling session as very good.

Tizzard said: "He jumped fine first time and jumped very nicely today. He's trained up lovely and he will run somewhere as soon as the weather breaks.

"We can have a look round in a fortnight wherever there is good ground and if we have to travel, we will. If we have to go up north, we will.

"At the moment the ground is getting firmer all the time, but we have this every year and by the third week of October it will start raining, it always does."

Thistlecrack has won his last five races and produced outstanding performances at Cheltenham and Aintree. If he makes a successful transition to fences he will bid to emulate Coneygree by trying to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup as a novice.
