Tip Of The Day: A stab at Zab

If Zabdi is ever going to break his duck, it might well happen in a lowly 0-55 at Kempton. Or so our Will Hayler hopes.

Tip Of The Day: Zabdi – 8.50 Kempton

If Zabdi is to ever break his duck, it's probably going to come in a lowly 0-55 event at Kempton like this evening's Racing UK in Glorious HD Classified Stakes.

Having started his career with Richard Hannon, the handicapper helpfully gave him a chance by dropping him 10lb to 55 after three starts for Lee Carter, all at this track, but there was a hint of promise on the second of those, when he had a better-fancied stablemate in opposition.

He then went back up to tonight's seven-furlong trip, and the tactics were changed to front-running just as the money went down. That money was lost as he faded into fifth close home, but there was a lot to like about the way he tried to see off his rivals before eventually lying down, and his chance was very much compromised by having Lutine Charlie take him on for the lead for the first half of the race, meaning Kieren Fox was always in a gear higher than he might have liked.

Stall 11 won't make it easy to replicate those tactics tonight, but that's perhaps no bad thing. If ridden a little more patiently (and 5lb claimer Paddy Bradley replaces Fox here) he is capable of improving upon that latest run, where he ended up virtually setting the race up for the closers.

Bradley rides again for Carter in the closing mile and three-furlong handicap, partnering Munsarim, but the nine-year-old is a mere spring chicken compared to Megalala, who, fast approaching his 16th birthday, has a very realistic chance of being the oldest horse to win on the Flat for a long time. As Bake-Off will have finished by 9.20pm, there's even half a chance my other half will let me watch it too.
