Tip Of The Day: Chase up Pursuit
After good runs from bad draws on his last couple of starts, is it time for the cards to fall right for Flying Pursuit?
Flying Pursuit (yellow and white colours): Is it his turn to get his head in front again today?
With 24 hours to go until British Champions Day, many of the big trainers could be forgiven for having their attentions firmly focused on Ascot. The fields tomorrow are genuinely excellent and with good ground almost guaranteed, it should be a brilliant day's racing.
However, up at Haydock today there are a number of big stables saddling particularly well-touted runners and it's to the credit of the track that they draw in these kind of horses.
I have been passed on good words for Cashla Bay, Classical Times and Queen Of Time in the six-furlong fillies' maiden at 2.00, while both Weekender and Desert Dream are reportedly very well regarded for the first division of the mile maiden at 3.45. At the prices, I might chance a pound on the latter, whose pedigree offers an appealing mix of speed and stamina.
London Prize is one who stands out in the closing two-mile handicap at 5.30 as he moves up in trip on his handicap debut and the under-rated Ian Williams has few peers when it comes to getting one right on the day – watch the betting market.
However, the horse blessed with my nap vote at Haydock in the Crispy Cod Knowsley Road Handicap (which Google Street View confirms is indeed a fish-and-chip takeaway service just down the road) is Flying Pursuit, who has been done no favours at all by the draw on his last couple of starts.
He was high when everything else was low in the Ayr Silver Cup and then trapped wide from stall one when the whole field came across behind Kimberella – in the circumstances running a huge race to finish fifth.
There is no single group of horses designed to drive you more crazy than sprint handicappers who tease you into thinking that a revival is coming, only to fail to deliver even when everything looks right.
But there are numerous reasons for fancying Flying Pursuit on the formbook, and although the evidence as to whether blinkers have helped him since being applied two starts ago isn't clear-cut, I still suspect they might help his application in a tight finish.
Hopefully today's the day for it all to drop right again.
