Tip Of The Day: Crystal Clear?
Deauville Crystal could be worth chancing on her debut for Nigel Hawke in the opener at Market Rasen this afternoon.
Ciaran Gethings in action: Tidy
There are three horses I like the look of on the Market Rasen card today.
Vent Nivernais is appealingly-treated over fences and capable of going well in the 1.25 at a price if his jumping holds up, as I hope it will with another season on his back. He always had the scope to make a chaser.
Hubertas didn't show enough first time over hurdles at Bangor to give him much of a chance against favourite Bandsman in the 12.55, but he wasn't seen to best effect there for a number of reasons. I think the market has over-reacted to that ordinary run and with the headgear back on, I can see him giving Bandsman something to think about.
However, I'm first of all going to chance a very speculative pound on Deauville Crystal in the opener.
Sadly, we don't have access to this filly's European form in the French provinces and elsewhere, but a bit of Google searching reveals that she won in Germany as a two-year-old and finished fifth in a Listed race on her last start before being bought for £28,000 by Nigel Hawke at the sales.
Hawke will be pleased to see the back of November, his runners having produced not a placed run between them, let alone a winner, but this is a stable I like and they've already produced one decent juvenile hurdler this season in the shape of Nachi Falls from a similar source.
Clearly, there's lots we don't know about Deauville Crystal, but her dam comes from a good family and her siblings have all been fair performers, even if not prolific winners. A daughter of Breeders' Cup winner Raven's Pass, she presumably won't want conditions too testing, but in that respect today's race looks the right sort of contest and I like her chances at a double-figure price – even more with the tidy Ciaran Gethings taking off his 5lb claim.
