Tip of the Day: Gone for a Burton

Ben Linfoot provides today's racing Tip of the Day and he's chancing one after a long absence in Trevor Hemmings' colours.

BURTONS WELL – 2.50 Wincanton

Venetia Williams had her first winner of the season on Wednesday and we are now approaching the time of year the yard traditionally gets going.

With that in mind, she might not have to wait long for her second victory and Trevor Hemmings' Burtons Well makes plenty of appeal in the Trial RacingUK For Free Now Chase (Novices' Limited Handicap) at Wincanton today, despite a 613-day absence from the track.

The half-brother to the classy Burton Port looked an exciting prospect when he won his novice hurdle on debut from some likely types, including Buckhorn Timothy, now rated 138 over fences, but a few reverses in similar company (fell when five lengths clear in one race) was the precursor to a spell on the sidelines.

However, chasing was always going to be his game and now, his fencing debut, off a mark of 125, could well be the time to catch him, despite that long absence.

Rated 130 over hurdles, this looks a lenient chase mark and the handicapper has perhaps gone a bit easy on him because of his time away from the game.

Yet with the excellent Charlie Deutsch taking off a further 5lb – he was victorious on Williams' Chepstow winner Azert De Couer on Wednesday – this looks a good opportunity for the Well Chosen gelding.

Smoking Jacket looks a weak favourite having gone up 7lb for winning a poor race last time, while Sirabad and Lettheriverrundry might need further to show their best.

Burtons Well may well appreciate further in time, too, but his novice hurdling exploits suggest he'll be fine at this trip, especially granted an aggressive ride, and he looks an exciting option against the market leader. Anything around 5/1 with the Best Odds Guaranteed proviso looks fair.
