Tip of the Day: Hit the Post
Our Tip of the Day concerns a Warren Greatrex-trained mare in a novices' hurdle at Lingfield this afternoon.
Warren Greatrex: Trains Postbridge
There's a whole host of short-price favourites all over the place today and one that I wouldn't want to take on is Venetia Williams' Un Prophete in the 1.30 Southwell.
He warmed to his task nicely at Ludlow last week and won by 16 lengths in a novice handicap chase on his fencing debut, suggesting he could go on a bit of a winning streak given he started off a lowly mark of 108.
Under a 7lb penalty today he's officially 4lb well-in and it looks a weak contest. I've seen many worse 5/4 shots, the only potential negative being the six-day turnaround.
I couldn't put you off him, but I am keen to take on the odds-on Tearsofclewbay in the Injured Jockeys Fund Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Lingfield (3.30).
Philip Hobbs' mare has a standout chance on form but she weakened in soft ground at Haydock last time and while that was a much stronger race, she does have to give 7lb away to the field today.
She's not straightforward and can be keen, so she's by no means a solid odds-on chance and there is some potential in against her with Queen Odessa and POSTBRIDGE in the field.
The former, trained by Harry Fry, beat Nicky Henderson's Kayf Grace in a bumper at Doncaster this time last year and that mare has won three times since, so she's an interesting hurdling debutant.
However, at the prices a chance is taken on Warren Greatrex's Postbridge at 8/1.
She also showed good form in bumpers and finished second to Potters Legend, a horse that was second at Cheltenham on Saturday, on her debut at Fakenham.
Since then she's finished second in a few more bumpers and she was in the process of running a big race on her hurdling debut at Fontwell last month when she landed awkwardly after the third last and almost got rid of Andrew Tinkler.
That ended her chance, but she had shaped well before that incident and plenty of improvement is expected this afternoon. In a small field with doubts against the favourite and with Queen Odessa hurdling for the first time, now could be the time catch her.
