Tip of the Day: Imperial rule
Our Matt Brocklebank reckons champion jockey Richard Johnson will be on the board with Imperial Presence at Ascot today.
Richard Johnson: Can
Imperial Presence ran a decent race in what could turn out to be one of the better novices' handicap chases to be run so far this season at Newbury and it's no surprise to see him strong in the market this morning for Ascot's 1.20.
He's shortening as I type but there's reason to believe there could still be a bit of juice in his odds around the 11/2 mark and he's definitely worth another chance.
Philip Hobbs' Presenting gelding hasn't tasted success since his racecourse debut in a novice hurdle at Kempton last November but he went on to post a few more excellent efforts over timber last term, including a one and a half-length second to Brain Power.
Chasing looks like making a man of him, though, with his debut in this sphere at Exeter giving the impression he'd win plenty of races this season.
He and the classy Old Guard battled out a close finish, with the latter prevailing by just a neck, and they pulled 42 lengths clear of the third.
Last month's effort in fifth was no disgrace at all and the experience gained at Newbury should stand him in good stead.
The handicapper has dropped Imperial Presence 1lb on the back of that run and it's hard to get away from the notion he has the potential to be much better than a 129-rated animal in the fullness of time.
