Tip of the Day: Make it Mustard
Ben Linfoot is in the Tip of the Day hotseat and he heads to Bangor where Kerry Lee has an interesting contender.
Kerry Lee: Her Magic Mustard could improve at Bangor today
This horse has been stuffed twice at Warwick and both times he was wearing cheekpieces, including last time. Whether it's Warwick or the cheekpieces or both, something about the combination doesn't agree with him.
But if you take out those two performances he's got a perfectly progressive profile for this grade.
On his handicap debut at Chepstow in October he ran a sound race off 96 to finish a close-up fourth, and he built on that when winning at Fontwell next time off a mark of 94.
He's only dropped 1lb following his Warwick flop to a mark of 99, but that'll be a competitive rating judging by his Fontwell win where he stayed on well to seal the deal over two miles and five furlongs.
That suggests he'll improve for the step up in trip to three miles and his pedigree backs the theory up. He's a full brother to point and hunter chase winner Viking Splash, so he really could leave his previous form behind now tackling the extra distance.
The cheekpieces are dispensed with and a first-time tongue-tie is employed and, in an open heat with a few question marks over the market leaders, he's worth a small interest at double-figure prices.
