Tip Of The Day: ‘Pen friend?

With Lingfield having bitten the dust, it's the Polytrack card at Chelmsford City this evening that is taking Will Hayler's eye.

Will Tony Hamilton be getting all the attention after his ride on Shypen?

Shypen – 8.15 Chelmsford City

The sad loss of Lingfield's card leaves us with just three all-weather British Flat meetings to enjoy today, and there's a fair case for giving the afternoon a miss as the action at Chelmsford City this evening looks the most interesting of the trio – although the start of the Dubai Carnival at Meydan should be worth catching too.

Lancelot Du Lac is a class act and I'd have fancied him to go close to giving the weight away in the five-furlong handicap at 6.45 but for some fairly downbeat comments from trainer Dean Ivory about his fitness on his first start for six months. It's enough to just put me off.

Jiminez is interesting at a big price in the opener at 5.45 having competed at a generally higher level than this on the Flat during 2016 and shown himself capable of very smart form on occasions. He stays further than this mile, so hopefully he'll be allowed to go from the front – he might just get a soft lead too, as I wonder whether anything else in this line-up wants to go on.

The one I am concentrating upon today though is Shypen in the 8.15, who has joined Richard Fahey after winning a couple for George Margarson in the autumn. Her previous connections evidently felt the handicapper had done enough to stop her after that but there has been plenty of encouragement to be taken from her three starts for Fahey, most recently when fourth at this track over six furlongs behind stablemate El Viento – she was repeatedly stopped in her run in the final two furlongs and surely would have gone close if the gaps had appeared.

The move back up to seven furlongs looks a positive and from a nice-looking draw in stall two, I'm confident she'll give a good account of herself despite this being quite a competitive 0-85.
