Tip of the Day: Powell punt

Matt Brocklebank fancies a Brendan Powell-trained juvenile to prove ahead of his initial mark at Epsom this afternoon.

Brendan Powell: Two-year-old runners generally brought along steadily

Tip of the Day: Spiritofedinburgh (2.00 Epsom)

The Brendan Powell-trained Spiritofedinburgh didn't repeat the form of his promising second outing when ninth of 10 at Lingfield just over a fortnight ago but subsequent events show that finishing down the field in that race was by no means a disgrace and he's worth chancing in the opening Ebbisham Nursery (2.00) at Epsom this afternoon.

The winner, Grey Britain, has since acquitted himself well when fifth to Blue Point in the Gimcrack, while the fourth home has won a nursery at Yarmouth off a mark of 69 and the fifth landed a Salisbury maiden.

It's obviously a race that is going to throw up a few more future winners and based on the aforementioned promising effort, when building on his debut run to post a highly creditable third behind Baby Gal at Leicester, Spiritofedinburgh could be among them.

It's worth highlighting at this point that Powell isn't the first port of call for most when it comes to backing two-year-olds and it's been a few years since he sent out a juvenile winner, but statistical analysis is put to one side in this instance in favour of the impression made by this particular individual. The double-figure odds on offer also more than factor in such doubts.

A half-brother to several winners including the same stable's high-class Dark Emerald, the son of Lilbourne Lad has plenty of scope for improvement moving up to seven furlongs for the first time in his career and he should at least be competitive from a mark of 71 on his handicap bow under Fran Berry.

Market leader Act Of Freedom is a long way from being a stable star at Charlie Appleby's but should also benefit from tackling this distance having lacked the gears for six furlongs in this maiden starts, but the biggest danger may be posed by Suffragette City.

She was tipped on these pages in a Wolverhampton maiden but came up just short behind Ralph Beckett's Goya Girl and now has a few questions to answer after being dropped 1lb for that recent performance.
