Tip of the Day: Silver lining

Ben Linfoot heads to Exeter for the sportinglife.com racing tip of the day with one of Philip Hobb's fancied.

Philip Hobbs: Trains Silver Commander

Vinnie Roe never won a Melbourne Cup but he gave it a bloody good go.

Dermot Weld's horse ran in the race three times, finishing fourth to Media Puzzle and second and eighth to the legendary Makybe Diva, running off a bigger weight on each occasion.

There were no little Vinnie's in this morning's edition of the race, unsurprisingly for a National Hunt stallion, but he does have an interesting contender on this afternoon's card at Exeter.

The horse in question is Barney Dwan in the 188bet.co.uk Novices' Chase, and he might have been a bet too but for the looming presence of Emerging Force who looked just that on his chasing debut at Hereford.

Barney Dwan gets 5lb from Emerging Force here because of that win, while Fergal O'Brien is in cracking form.

The form of his EBF Final win at Sandown has worked out well too, and connections always felt he'd be at his best over a trip on good ground.

He'll have his work cut out to deny Emerging Force on his chase debut though, while the feature race on the card, the Haldon Gold Cup, also looks a race to watch and enjoy with Garde La Victoire taking on Dodging Bullets, Presenting Arms et al in what is a tricky contest to call.

Philip Hobbs' well-backed favourite may well be the answer, but I fancy the Somerset handler to have a winner later on the card with SILVER COMMANDER in the Smith & Williamson Handicap Chase (3.20).

This horse hasn't been seen for 570 days, but Hobbs is perfectly capable of getting one fit after a long absence and this horse has proven he can go well fresh in the past.

One such occasion was his last run, his first for three and a half months, where he won a four-runner novices' limited handicap chase with ease by eight lengths after travelling smoothly throughout.

He looked much better than a 125 horse that day but the handicapper lets him run off the same mark here thanks to his long break.

Good ground and three miles holds no fears for him on that evidence either, and market support for Sun Wild Life means he's going to go off a backable price. Anything around the 5/1 mark with the Best Odds Guaranteed proviso looks a perfectly fair wager.
