Tip of the day: The fast show
Ian Ogg heads to Southwell for today's tip where he hopes a break and the switch to fibresand can work the oracle.
Mark Johnston, trainer of Tailors Row
Mark Johnston's runners at the Nottinghamshire track are always worthy of a second glance and he saddles two in the competitive sprint nursery at 2.25.
It is a strong field as you would expect for a race worth almost £12,500 to the winner and there is little early encouragement for Tailors Row who has been off since mid-September when failing to fire at Catterick.
A fair amount has to be taken on trust then with a colt who has returned a beaten favourite in three of his four starts since winning his maiden at Chelmsford but the very fact that he has been so well supported does suggest connections believe there is more to come.
That debut effort was a decent one with the useful Kreb's Cycle in second and nursery winner Kodiac Khan a four and a half length third, while a subsequent Listed second finished another three and a quarter lengths back in fourth.
It is possible that he found his second run coming too soon as he posted a much better performance at York on the back of a month off before posting a similar effort at Chester.
All of this will need to be improved upon if he is to gain a second career victory but his sire, Street Cry, has a decent record with his fibresand runners and it would be no surprise if this American bred colt were able to post a career best on his return to action at a course where Johnston is around one in four with his juveniles.
The Middleham handler and jockey PJ McDonald were on the mark in a nursery at Kempton last night and, at 12/1, the pair are worth a small interest to land this Southwell prize.
