Tip of the Day: Time for T
Matt Brocklebank heads to Kelso for the racing tip of the day, where a well-treated course scorer can get back to winning ways.
It's been a long time between drinks but Maxie T returns to his old haunt Kelso this afternoon and is fancied to get back to winning ways in the Brewin Dolphin Handicap Hurdle (3.35).
Formerly with Mark Johnston on the Flat and Jonjo O'Neill earlier in his jumps career, the Dalakhani gelding opened his National Hunt account with an 18-length victory over two miles, two furlongs here last December, on his second start for current handler Harriet Graham.
That was the sort of wide-margin win that clearly pleased connections at the time, but also caught the eye of the handicapper. To be fair to Maxie T, he performed admirably well for the rest of last season despite going up from a mark of 119 to 132, though it's understandable he failed to register another victory.
It's been a bit of a slow burner in four starts so far this term but his handicap mark has now come right back down to 118 and there were clear signs of life when a running-on fourth under Joe Colliver at Haydock last month.
That was an encouraging performance under similar conditions he faces today and although he's never won over quite this far, the six-year-old looks all about stamina these days.
It's one of the more competition races on the Kelso card but Maxie T is strong in the market this morning and the money is worth following with Rowdy Rocher up in the weights and Rhymers Stone facing a rise in class following his narrow success at Newcastle.
